it's difficult to think that it's actually now xmas eve. well it's 340 am on 24th december 2006. now i wonder what i actually wrote last year on xmas eve, shall go check.

haha quite surprised at my own post. a year ago. this year seems to have flown past, as with every other year when you look back at it. well here was what it was.

"maybe i'm jaded by christmas. i can't even tolerate the huge christmas crowds anymore. every evening i see huge crowds in town and i'm thinking why these people aren't at home, for they do have work the next day so get home and stop crowding the late night mrt trains already."

this year seems exactly the same. i'm not jaded but i guess there's really not much xmas cheer now. well we had our very early xmas party yesterday featuring my batch/clique and 2 guests (the 2 lawyers.) chloe mei is. family. so i don't know where she fits in. (so do we all get presents now chloe?) it was all good fun playing taboo and they had their stupid version of pictionary. i had violent killer hiccups from pictionary onwards so i had to remain in a sleeping position to stop them. yes i do have very bad hiccups that really hurt and jerk my whole body. eugene says it's diaphragm cancer - i'm sure he's going to fail his medicine exams haha.

the xmas light ups this year seem like leftovers from deepavali, while the decorations by the roads do appear to be plucked from hari raya (yellow/gold tree-like things). it's all pretty sad. i haven't really managed to appreciate or look at what the shopping centres have, but centrepoint seems quite disappointing. ohhhhhh well.

so the mood this year at carolling hasn't been terrific as well. well we started out fine yesterday i think. i conducted the choir and felt rather queer cos 1. everyone's on autopilot anyway, 2. i think i'm really terrible at conducting now. but then the turnout has been bad there's seriously an imbalance of guys/girls. it's gonna be xmas eve carolling and nobody seems really up for it. i guess after 8 years of carolling for me (and many more for the seniors) all the talk about how exciting carolling can be has now worn off. i've given up on trying to establish anymore links with vjchoir that we used to love singing with come december. i guess. i. am. getting. old. but then we still make our own fun when we sing and so that helps. i am an idiot afterall.

today's carolling was honestly quite terrible at some places considering the crowd was really not up for it. quite weird considering yesterday's friday crowd was larger and more boisterous than today's saturday crowd. perhaps weekend prices scare merry-makers away.

so it doesn't feel like it's xmas eve. it doesn't feel like it's going to be xmas soon. and then the new year and a new school term beckons. i'm not happy. but i'm so glad i'll be having some good company for the countdown to xmas.

it's such a long random post about stuff involving my christmas this year. but something's missing.

today i spoke to an american lady on the bus. it was quite weird cos i'm usually friendly but not exactly very friendly to strangers. but anyway she was obviously new to singapore cos she wanted to take a picture of the bus driver to prove to her husband she took a bus! well turned out her husband's an expat here and they're going to bangkok for a few days next and then they'll be back here for nye.

she has 2 kids 34 and 33, both studied at lehigh university and found their husband and wife there. and she has grandchildren.

she then proceeded to take a picture of me cos i was friendly. haha i felt like an asian specimen.

but well. it was nice to have a short chat of 5 mins and know abit bout her as seen above and end off with a smile. all with a simple hello. we should all be nicer to strangers sometimes.

Chances - Athlete

Take all your chances while you can
You never know when they'll pass you by
Like a sum the mathematician cannot solve
Like me trying my hardest to explain

It's all about your cries and kisses
Those first steps that I can't calculate
I need some more of you to take me over

Take me over

If I had the chance to start again
Then you would be the one I'd come and find
Like a poster of Berlin on my wall
Maybe there's a chance our walls might fall

It's all about your cries and kisses
Those first steps that I can't calculate
I need some more of you to take me over

It's all about your cries and kisses
Those first steps that I can't calculate
I need some more of you to take me over

I know I because I cant calculate

How to start again
How to start again
How to start again
How to start again

It's all about you

the tennis four. (from L - R: u-jin, mehmeh, fat kiat, fat jiakai)

yes i know the latter 2 are fat but you can't fault us for effort in trying to play tennis to beat the flab. but when every session follows up with a mega pig out session at chomp chomp hawker it ain't that healthy afterall. so we've been playing tennis these 2 weeks, kindly weirdly cos it's the last 2 weeks of proper school and everyone's rushing deadlines and beginning to hit the books but well, we think time spent having fun is time well spent. ok lah at least i think so. been trying to look for rollerblading buddies but it's been kinda futile so far. but okay so far it's 3 sports that make me wanna get up and moving.

1. football

typical guy stuff. i try to play everytime there's a session on saturday but with school work and other commitments it's really been difficult.

2. rollerblading

learnt this at maybe 12 or 13? really learnt via falling with my dad being coach cos. my dad doesn't blade. but yea the whole idea of blading down the east coast park checking out the sun, sand, and babes really gets me motivated to get moving. okay but of course there're health benefits too. we used to blade alot back in vj buttttt. my friends now don't like to get moving on wheels.

3. tennis

latest pick up. hope this fad lasts! only properly learnt about the "windscreen motion" and various grips courtesy of mehmeh these past sessions.

waking up at 730 am to brush your teeth and then going back to sleep until 830 am is useless for doing work. i know, cos i just it.

i usually wake up 30 mins before i have to leave for school, rush through everything and end up on the trains perspiring. but i've been trying to cultivate the habit of sleeping by midnight and waking up by 6, or something like 5 hours before i need to leave the house for school. it lasted all of 3 days i think, and those 3 days felt good. i've always wanted to do the whole morning coffee/read the newspapers thing, and i figured mornings passed really slowly when you woke up early. well i still have 2 hours for it. but it's meant for work.

work,work.

how long before work/school do you wake up?

it's not so tough being called a pigeon afterall.

PARIS - Pigeons and baboons have a remarkably good long-term memory, according to a study by French and US animal behaviourists published on Monday.

Mr Joel Fagot of France's National Centre for Scientific Research in Marseille and Mr Robert Cook of Tufts University, Massachusetts, recruited both species in an innovative test into picture recall.

Two male 18-year-old baboons and two Silver King pigeons were placed in front of computers and were shown pictures.

They had to peck - in the case of the monkeys, using a joystick - a cross or a circle to show whether or not they had seen the image before.

Over five years, birds Linus and BF memorised 800 to 1,200 different pictures before reaching their limit.

The baboons, more prosaically called No. 3 and No. 9, had memorised 3,500 to 5,000 pictures and had not yet reached a limit by the end of the study.

The two species demonstrated similar memory-loss rates and reaction times.

They only differed in their memory capacity, according to the paper, which appears in the US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

'We can infer that the baboons performed below their real capability level, given that they achieved an 80 per cent accuracy rate after the learning period,' Mr Fagot said in an interview.

Memory capacity was probably shaped powerfully by evolution and was probably key to the rise of intelligence in humans, the authors suggest. -- AFP

from a stupid guy. haha.

The Guys' Rules
At last a guy has taken the time to write this all down Finally, the guys' side of the story.
(I must admit, it's pretty good.)
We always hear
"the rules"
From the female side.
Now here are the rules from the male side.
These are our rules!
Please note...these are all numbered
"1"
ON PURPOSE!

1. Men ARE not mind readers.

1. Learn to work the toilet seat.
You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down.
We need it up, you need it down.
You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

1. Sunday sports. It's like the full moon
or the changing of the tides.
Let it be.

1. Shopping is NOT a sport.
And no, we are never going to think of it that way.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want.
Let us be clear on this one:
Subtle hints do not work!
Strong hints do not work!
Obvious hints do not work!
Just say it!

1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.

1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it. That's what we do.
Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

1. A headache that lasts for 17 months IS a
problem. See a doctor.

1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument.
In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 Days.

1. If you won't dress like the Victoria's Secret girls,
don't expect us to act like soap opera guys.

1. If you think you're fat, you probably are.
Don't ask us.

1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one.

1. You can either ask us to do something
Or tell us how you want it done.
Not both.
If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

1. Whenever possible, Please say whatever you have to say during commercials.

1. Christopher Columbus did NOT need directions and neither do we.

1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings.
Peach, for example, is a fruit, not a color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have
no idea what mauve is.

1. If it itches, it
will Be scratched.
We do that.

1. If we ask what is wrong and you say "nothing," We will act like nothing's wrong.
We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

1. If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, Expect an answer you don't want to hear.

1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear Is fine... Really.

1. Don't ask us what we're thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as baseball, the shotgun formation,
Or
golf.

1. You have enough clothes.

1. You have too many shoes.

1. I am in shape. Round IS a shape!

1. Thank you for reading this.
Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight; but did you know men really don't mind that? It's like camping.

Pass this to as many men as you can,
to give them a laugh.

Pass this to as many women as you can, to give them a bigger laugh

recently the business bug has bitten me again. i, being hopelessly brand whore and materialistic and practical, obviously hope to be rich and powerful in the future. a few ways typically crop up when these thoughts hit me.

here are some of them.

1. maintain my 1st-class gpa get my 1st-class degree get a 1st-class job get a 1st-class pay. << feasible, strongly encouraged.
2. start a business. << madness.

i shall expand on 2. because, 1. is just. like that. it's something everyone else does and can do and i obviously can do too. so, no sweat. but 2. is the interesting one.

2. can be expanded into several subsections, namely what exactly to start? here're a few of my favourites in recent months/days.

a. start a donut shop.
b. start a wine cafe.
c. start a popular blog.
d. start a cafe.

to be perfectly honest, i have no deep passion nor interest in donuts. i merely eat them when i want to. i don't crave for them, and i certainly am no donut-fanatic. wine does far worse in my priority list. i don't even like wine. i just drink it because everyone else is and i like the sweet ones which don't get me drunk. so much for being a sophisticated. so a. and b. seem perfectly out of the question.

c. is an idea that was sparked because well. youtube just got sold for 1.6bn dollars. that explains any motivation behind any internet idea.

d. is something i'm sure every student thinks of. i mean, the perfect place, cosy, cool, funky, for you and YOUR FAVOURITE PEOPLE to go to.

okay i'm going to bed. my great business plans posts shall be adjourned until further notice. which means until i bother to post. zzz. i haven't finished anything i've wanted to say yet. so i'll be revisiting this definitely.

selemat hari raya everyone.

it's still kinda early but i resolve to sleep by midnight tonight. actually every day for awhile i've resolved to sleep by midnight and wake up at 6 am to do work or just enjoy the morning. the nights don't seem to be productive at all now so why not take a little more time in the morning to eat, read the papers and do work before i head to school. well it seems like the mornings are endless when you actually prop yourself out of bed at 6 am so yea i like this habit.

here's something that's always been in me. everyone wants their own way. and i think this every single time i'm at a traffic light crossing 2 roads perpendicular to each other. so the green man appears and you cross once to one side. and at the same instance you immediately wish for the other green man to appear. wouldn't you have hated this green man to appear before you'd crossed the first road? for that'd have meant a red man at your side (usually). hypothesis tested by me, found to be true. haha.

okay bad english paragraph that was. bathe and sleep.

misery loves company.

Does misery love company, or does misery make company equally miserable? Psychologists have long pondered whether couples and close friends are depressed in tandem because one person's mood poisons the well, or because people gravitate towards significant others with the same traits.

In the first longitudinal comparison of mood in romantic partners and roommates, Chris Segrin, Ph.D, a professor of psychology and communications at the University of Arizona at Tucson, found that emotional tone is set at the starting gate.

Segrin surveyed 153 dating couples and 170 pairs of roommates for three months. He concluded that women's emotional states?positive or negative?were unrelated to changes in their boyfriends' moods and vice versa. Moreover, couples that had been dating longer were no more likely to mirror each other's emotional states than were newly minted partners. "I was surprised by how similar the partners' moods remained over time. I thought there'd be much more fluctuation," says Segrin.

There was evidence of short-lived emotional contagion: Severely depressed subjects were more likely to have a roommate whose mood declined over a six-week period than were less depressed subjects. But subjects cheered up noticeably when they spent time away from their miserable roommates. "Emotional contagion doesn't last for weeks; it is more fleeting and transient," says Segrin, who thinks people believe otherwise because "the idea that you 'catch' emotions like you catch the flu is seductively simple and parsimonious."

While this study focused on depressive mood, Segrin's results, presented at the American Psychological Association annual meeting, were the same for people with sunny dispositions. "Couples were as matched on positive affect as on negative affect. Happy people seek out happy people, and those who are down and out seek the same."

All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players.

so says. who? i'm not sure myself, only that gary oldman did it for a nokia ad. sorry i'm not so cultured! but i like the line.

sooooo. i'm finally relieved of this project i've been working on consecutively for the past week and not had time to do anything else. it was really torrid staring at excel spreadsheets for 8 hours x 3 days and not giving it up. it got kinda amusing at the same time because i was convinced i started feeling an itch in my brain. it was just really nervy knowing that after staring at something for 8 hours you still can't figure what went wrong. i can never be a programmer i guess. and we handed up our project late in the end. if i don't get decent marks for it i'm going to cry cos it cost me alot of brain cells, alot of time, and a midnight cab fare.

well anyway for the first night in a week i feel rather free and sort of don't have stuff on my hand to do. okay i have work and studies and what not but i need a break. for now. anyway something my ais prof said has stuck with me for abit. "you're a student right? so your only job is to study right?" well i semi agree with that. i'd like to think that ideally as a student my job is only to study, but well there're other things in life you have to juggle. many of us work part time nowadays so work is obviously on the radar of "to worry about". plus we do have a social life. and family. and stuff. well the problem with studying is the hours it takes. if it were a job we shouldn't be hitting the books beyond 9 to 6 everyday. weeeee can't.

okay i haven't posted what i really wanted to post but i'm bored already. i'm sure i have attention deficit disorder which prevents me from watching tv as well.

bye!

i caught forbidden city the musical. it was totally out of the blue so very official apologies to gerald and yc, jean sim's friend's brother pulled out on them so yea i rushed down on a very expensive $3 surcharge cab to the esplanade. the cab fare topped $8 for a trip from somerset to the esplanade. ouch. anyway the show wasn't fantastic, kit chan went out of tune for some part that was very obvious, the main chorus was generally lousy and overall i'd say the show didn't blow me away as i hoped it would. but it's funny how some themes of the show resonate so much with (my) life now. and i guess the story was kinda interesting. anyway it was good to catch a musical again, i think the last show i watched on local shores was chang & eng, super duper long ago. and i caught that twice, cos they had 2 runs in 5 years or something.

oh and for those who have not discovered picasa, go give it a try. it's a photo sorting program and now comes with online web albums that you can upload directly to via picasa. so it's one seamless stream from transferring pics from yr cam to yr computer, editting a little maybe, and uploading it online to share. perfect for lazys like me. i really love the people at google now.

try it at http://picasa.google.com/

abstract countdown list.

16 days.
4 weeks.
15 weeks.

on another note. my week 2 of school ends tomorrow. it's nice to think that hey school's just started take it easy, but the fact is erm. i'm halfway through half the term, i.e. i'm halfway to mid term exams.

i have really gotta get my life in order. i hope this began with my first textbooks bought yesterday and first readings done today! i still feel like i'm walking into school simply to attend business talks everyday and totally unprepared for this 15 week journey to hell. urgh.
